Painted with spiralling colourful flower garlands, suspended from gilt vine, within tooled gilt lobed borders and gilt dentil rims, comprising:
A teapot (théière 'calabre') 358 in. (9 cm.) high
A hot milk jug and cover (pot à lait 'Hébert' et couvercle) 514 in. (13.3 cm.) high
A sugar-bowl and cover (sucre à 'bouret' et couvercle) 358 in. (9.2cm.) high
Six cups and saucers (gobelets 'Hébert' et soucoupes 'à cinq pans ronds')

Possibly acquired by Lady Charlotte Schreiber (1812-1895), formerly Guest,
thence by descent to the present owner.

Lot Essay

A similar service of the same date, also decorated by Denis Levé was in the Elizabeth Staffordshire Collection, sold Christie's, New York, 1 November 2018, lot 1091. A similar teapot, also dated 1755, is in the collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, (museum no. 47.35. 9a-b).

Denis Levé was a painter of flowers, patterns and birds at the Sèvres manufactory from 1754-93 and 1795-1805. Vincent Taillandier was a painter of flowers and ground patterns at the Sèvres manufactory from 1753 to 1790.
