A LATE LOUIS XV ORMOLU-MOUNTED, TULIPWOOD, AMARANTH AND BOIS DE BOUT MARQUETRY COMMODE
STAMPED BY PIERRE DENIZOT AND FRANÇOIS BAYER, CIRCA 1770
Pierre Denizot, maître in 1740. François Bayer maître in 1764.
This commode is highly comparable to that supplied by Bayer in 1771, through the fournisseur du Garde-Meuble de la Couronne Gilles Joubert, for the château de Compiègne. It was described in the Journal for 1 July: 'Joubert - Pour servir dans diffrents appartements au château de Compiègne... (Archives nationales, 01 3319, fol.62). The Compiègne commode was sold anonymously at Christie's Paris, 21 June 2006, lot 271. Further comparable commodes include that by Bayer sold Anonymous Sale; Christie's, 10th December 2009, lot 582. For similar mounts see Property of a Lady; Christie's, London, 5th July 2001, lot 105. As the ébéniste Pierre Denizot received his maîtrise in 1740, his main patrons were the Comte D'Artois, and the Comte de Provence, younger brothers of Louis XVI, where he supplied furniture for the Royal palaces.

Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
In country house condition, the later marble top with a few minor scratches, a repaired crack to the front right edge and a restored break to the front right corner. Some light restoration to the marquetry, further areas of minor loss to the veneers around the escutcheons and to the back legs. The mounts with the expected tarnishing and wear consistent with age and use. The baseboard lacking board and with severe shrinkage, planks to lower drawer with minor shrinkage. Some glue residue to internal carcass. Evidence of historic, but apparently inactive, woodworm. As stated in the cataloguing the back left leg is lacking its sabot.
