Lot Essay

Thomas Catesby Paget, Lord Paget (1689-1742), was the son of Henry Paget, 7th Baron Paget of Beaudesert, created 1st Earl of Uxbridge in 1714. He was a writer and politician, educated at Eton College and both Clare College, Cambridge and Trinity College, Oxford. He travelled abroad during the War of the Spanish Succession when he was captured by French forces whilst travelling to Italy through southern Germany. His father secured his release in 1710. His political career commenced in 1715 when he stood unopposed as member of Parliament for Staffordshire. He entered the court of George, Prince of Wales in 1719 as a gentleman of the bedchamber. He stood for parliament twice more in 1722 and in 1727 when following his defeat he was promoted to Lord of the Bedchamber to King George II, a post he held until 1736, when he was forced to resign through ill-health. His writings include an essay and other works in imitation of Alexander Pope. His elder son Henry (1719-1769) succeeded his grandfather 2nd Earl of Uxbridge on the latter's death in 1743.
