Lot Essay

Born in Lorraine, Israël Silvestre specialized in panoramic landscapes, many of them executed with a fine pen, enabling him to delicately record light and shadow on the buildings, as is the case in the present work. The style and urban subject-matter of the drawing are reminiscent of sheets by Silvestre at the École des Beaux-Arts (inv. EBA 1541) and the Frits Lugt Collection (inv. 4996; see V. Fernandez and O. Bienfait in La France vue du Grand Siècle. Dessins d’Israël Silvestre, exhib. cat., Paris, Musée du Louvre, 2018, nos. 7, 15, ill.).
