With a well-maintained appearance, structurally sound and ready to place. The ground with some overall cracquelure and minor chipping and losses as to be expected with age. Some typical areas of refreshment to the blue ground. The mounts probably originally ungilt and the gilding is 19th century. It has minor visible casting flaws, tarnish and light surface scratching. The cresting reinforced with brackets to the reverse. With one piece of molding off but retained. Solder repair to the cresting on the clock face between the 12 and 1 and another to the tree to the right of the hound. Glass face cracked. The front door stuck. The dial not fully examined but apparently original, the reverse of the clock face with a later wash. The left fretwork panel off, but retained. Both with some minor denting and backed with 19th century paper panels, the left side panel off and in two pieces but retained. The bracket with some faint horizontal cracking to the ground along with some flaked losses which is a bit heavier on the left side.
This is a flute playing clock, with bellows to pump and two barrels with tunes activated every hour on the hour. Quarter striking clock on two bells. Movement Continental, not French and apparently original to the clock. No pendulum. With one key. Requires a cleaning and tune up to be put in good working order. Please note that Christie’s does not guarantee working order of clocks.
