Lot Essay

The present lot was painted after Correggio's 16th century masterpiece 'The Holy Night' (or 'The Nativity') in the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister, Dresden. At the time of its purchase in 1746 by Augustus III, patron of the Meissen manufactory, the painting was already quite famous, and remains one of the most illustrious paintings in the Dresden State Art Collections.
