The present pair vases likely correspond with one of the following entries in the Sèvres records, both sold to M. Le Maitre on 30 March 1763: either a pair of the second size sold for 216 livres each; or, more likely, the the pair of the second size, described as having a blue ground, for 300 livres each, along with a cuvette 'Courteille' of the first size for 384 livres.
This vase shape was introduced in three sizes in 1754, with the name of the form evolving from 'à la hollandoise' to 'hollandois' by 1756. For a discussion of the form, and for illustrations of the vases in the Wallace Collection, London, see R. Savill, The Wallace Collection, Catalogue of Sèvres Porcelain, London, 1988, Vol. I, pp. 69-91.
The figure with the the hunting horn is after a vignette within an engraving by Jacques-Philippe Le Bas after Carel van Falens entitled Prise du Héron, 1745.
