David Peters notes that this service was begun for Madame du Barry in 1773, but production was discontinued and it was consigned to storage. Another plate from this rare, unfinished du Barry service was sold in the Pompey Collection, Christie's, New York, 23 May 2002, lot 47 ($47,800). A similarly decorated service was made for Maria Carolina, Queen of Naples and Sicily. See D. Peters, Sèvres Plates and Services of the 18th Century, vol. II, no. 73-8, pp. 495-498.
Étienne-Henry Le Guay l'aîné is recorded as gilder specializing in friezes at the Vincennes and Sèvres manufactory from 1748 to 1749 and from 1751 to 1797.
Jean-Baptiste-Emmanuel Vandé père is recorded as a painter at the manufactory from 1753 to 1779.
Antoine Caton is recorded as a figure painter at the manufactory from 1749-98.
Étienne-Henry Le Guay l'aîné is recorded as gilder specializing in friezes at the Vincennes and Sèvres manufactory from 1748 to 1749 and from 1751 to 1797.
Jean-Baptiste-Emmanuel Vandé père is recorded as a painter at the manufactory from 1753 to 1779.
