Issu d'une famille de menuisiers modestes, Pierre Roussel s'établit Rue de Charenton à l'enseigne l'Image de Saint Pierre et est décrit dès 1769 dans l’Almanach de Vray Merit comme l’un des premier ébénistes de Paris. En concurrence avec Jean-François Leleu, il fournit des meubles notamment pour le Prince de Condé au Palais-Bourbon ainsi qu'au château de Chantilly. Bien que son estampille soit utilisée par le père puis par le fils à la mort du premier en 1782, sa production durant le règne de Louis XV et Transition, se caractérise par sa grande fécondité, avec des meubles d'une grande diversité dans lesquels on retrouve l'élégance, le raffinement et le soin caractéristiques de son œuvre.

Provisional condition report Good overall condition. There are the inevitable minor dents, marks, scratches and rubbing consistent with age and use. There are two horizontal shrinkage cracks to the both lateral sides. Veneer : there are some minor losses especially one to the lower part of the front drawer and to the right front foot (approx. 2 cm and 1 cm.). There are some restorations to the veneer especially to the exposed areas of the feet. Gilding : is slightly rubbed and tarnish with some black spots especially to the front of the drawer. There is a lack to the top frieze which is slightly distorted. There is a casting flaw to the right front foot.
