ESTAMPILLE DE JACQUES PHILIPPE CAREL, MILIEU DU XVIIIe SIECLE
Jacques Philippe Carel, compagnon de Thomas Hache à Grenoble, parfois sous-traitant de François-Antoine Gaudreaus, est dans le deuxième tiers du XVIIIe siècle un ébéniste actif et important du faubourg Saint-Antoine. Sa production est dense et aujourd'hui ce ne sont pas moins de quatre-vingt dix œuvres qui nous sont parvenues. La profusion de meubles présentant cette marqueterie florale en bois de bout très atypique semble démontrer une spécialisation de Carel pour ces motifs. Situés au milieu du XVIIIe siècle nous connaissons aujourd'hui un grand nombre de commodes, secrétaires de pentes et encoignures présentant ce riche décor. Le plus souvent ces marqueteries présentent des essences plus foncées donnant un haut relief à l'ensemble du meuble, comme en témoigne notre présente paire de consoles. Citons notamment une très impressionnante paire de commodes conservées à la Frick Collection très représentatives de l'utilisation de ces marqueteries (inv. 1966.5.128.) Par ailleurs une perruquière quasi identique à notre lot, estampillée de Carel, fut vendue à Drouot le 28 mai 2014, lot 190.

The website illustrations are accurate. Country house condition. There are the inevitable dents, marks, scratches, shrinkage cracks and rubbing consistent with age and use. As stated in the catalogue, each one stamped 'CAREL' and JME' under the left rail. As stated in the catalogue the left foot of one commode is broken and needs to be restored. There are some losses to the veneer especially to the edges of the feet of one commode and the frontal drawer of both commode. Leather : slightly worn as expected with minor tears and losses. Ormolu mounts : as stated in the catalogue, they are later. With sign of tarnishing. Some minor traces of verdigris. Marble tops : with some minor yellow stains, chips to the edges and scuff marks.
