A DONEGAL CARPET
DESIGN BY GAVIN MORTON (1867-1954) AND G.K. ROBERTSON, KILLYBEGS, IRELAND, CIRCA 1900
The present carpet illustrates the popularity of Turkish, particularly Ushak, carpets in Europe in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Such pieces were among the most sought-after commodities imported from the Ottoman Empire and their designs influenced many contemporaneous craftsmen in the west. British artists such as Morton, Robinson and Voysey were among those finding inspiration in Turkish carpets, blending Gothic revival designs with oriental motifs. The design of the present lot is among those works that successfully fuses both, creating an unmistakably 'Arts & Crafts' design. For carpets with a similar design, please refer to Malcolm Haslam, Arts & Crafts Carpets, London, 1991, figs. 68, 69 and 70.

The pile is full and very thick throughout, resting around a centimetre above the knot collar. The sides are secured with selvages, with a small split in the lower left corner which measures 2cm in length and is confined to the outer blue guard stripe, which could be easily repaired. The ends are secure and retain a small part of the knotted fringe. There are small touches of repiling to the ends, once again limited to the outer guard stripe, which have been done in a slightly paler blue colour.
