Elaborately carved overall and surmounted by a naturalistic flame finial, the dished top with laurel wreath banding above a frieze of confronting dolphins and griffins, on tripod supports headed by bucrania terminating in paw feet, centred by a serpent entwined shaft on a stepped plinth base

The present athenienne was most certainly executed after engraving by Giovanni Battista Piranesi after the tripod found at Ostia by Gavin Hamilton in 1775 and published in Vasi, candelabri, cippi (...) disegnati ed incisi dal Cav. Gio. Batt. Piranesi, Rome 1778 (J. Wilton-Ely, Giovanni Battista Piranesi. The Complete Etchings, San Francisco 1994, Vol. II, no. 947-948).
