Lot Essay

The source for this design is taken from Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-78), from his two volume book of engravings, Profilio di una Nave antica de marmo, 1778.

A pair of Meissen nefs of this form, but with coloured decoration, were sold Christie's, London, 8 July 2002, lot 305. A further example of the model was exhibited by Daniela Kumpf at the 1999 International Ceramics Fair in London, illustrated in the Handbook, p.77. She identified this as perhaps being the Sauciere als Schiff made between 1819 and 1830 and noted in the factory price list.
