Lot Essay

The Pontremoli workshop at 11 Spring Street, Paddington, London, started around 1908 under the ownership of J.M.Pontremoli (1888-1952) and produced a range of needlework carpets. The historical designs were based on Queen Anne designs copied from the Victoria and Albert Museum by young girls. Most examples were of similar or smaller dimensions to the present lot however, a few were produced in much larger format, including one that sold in these Rooms, 23 May 2012, lot 375. The workshop ceased weaving carpets in the late 1930s.
