The de Lamerie casters were deemed to be 'duty dodgers' by the Antique Plate Committee at the Goldsmiths' Hall, London. The hallmarks on a 'Duty Dodger' would have been cut out from an existing hallmarked object but of a lighter weight by the silversmith who manufactured the piece, thus evading the tax of one shilling per ounce for hallmarked silver. Hallmarks on the base of casters at this date were usually struck in a cluster as found on the Cuny caster. When casters are marked with the hallmarks in a line, as on the Lamerie examples, they thought to be duty dodgers.
