Lot Essay

Ceramic forms inspired by those excavated during the Grand Tour were highly popular mosaic subjects during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, often executed by the most talented mosaicist for jewelry and snuffboxes. Similar examples by Giacomo Raffaelli are illustrated in R. Grieco & A. Gambino, Roman Micromosaic: L'Arte del micromosaico fra '700 e '800, 2001, p. 99-100. Another example, mounted to a tortoiseshell box, was sold at Sotheby's, London, 11 December 2020, lot 60.
