Ce cabinet illustre parfaitement la richesse de la marqueterie qui se développe en Allemagne du Sud dans la seconde moitié du XVIe siècle. Réputés dans toute l'Europe pour leur qualité, ces cabinets nommés Schreibsschränke représentent souvent, à l'image de ce présent meuble, des caprices architecturaux réalisés grâce à un savant et minutieux assemblage de fines pièces de multiples essences de bois indigènes. Ce cabinet a probablement été produit à Augsbourg, important centre de production de marqueterie tout au long des XVIe et XVIIe siècles. Déjà réputée pour sa production d'orfèvrerie exportée dans toute l'Europe, la ville voit naître sous l'impulsion des demandes princières de nombreux ateliers d'ébénistes. Objet de voyage luxueux, ce cabinet pouvait aisément être transporté grâce à ses poignées latérales. Soucieux de la réputation de leurs travaux de marqueterie, ces artisans appelés Kistler tenaient à la robustesse et à la qualité de leurs productions dont le motif n'était constitué que grâce à la petitesse des incrustations de bois, si bien qu'aucune gravure n'était ensuite nécessaire pour ajouter des détails aux décors représentés.

The website illustrations are accurate. There are the inevitable minor dents, marks, scratches, shrinkage cracks and rubbing consistent with age and use. The front left foot has been superficially restored. The right-down drawer is a simulated one and has a secret one inside to the left. Marquetery: The colors are slightly sun faded as expected. As stated in the catalogue, there are some restorations to the marquetery throughout and to the left upper part with 'gomme-laque' paste filling. As stated in the catalogue there is a crack to the right corner of the upper part of the back and some flaking areas. There is a crack to the left side of the front panel (approx. 25 cm.). There is a minor shrinkage crack running to the top. Inside, some wooden pieces of the left panel and drawer are detached and need to be re-fixed. Fittings : As stated in the catalogue, the fittings are probably reused. They are rubbed, with scratches, some signs of tarnishing and oxidation due to age and use. Some screws to the lock are missing. Handles : in bronze. They are later. The left fixation of the left handle is slightly loose. Plexiglass pedestal: as stated in the catalogue, we join a plexiglass pedestal. Some elements are missing to the upper sides and are partly restored. There are some scratches and traces of rubbing to the upper sides.
