En placage d'ébène et marqueterie Boulle en première partie d'écaille de tortue caouanne et filets de laiton, ornementation de bronze ciselé et doré, le cadran à cartouches émaillés inscrit dans une boîte en tête de poupée à décor de rinceaux surmontée d'Eros, les côtés flanqués de masques couronnés de feuilles de chêne, la façade présentant Saturne allongé, le socle à pieds gaine, le mouvement signé 'Gaudron Paris', l'orgue à musique signé 'J.B.Dutertre A Paris' ; la gaine en marqueterie Boulle en première partie d'écaille de tortue caouanne, laiton et ornementation de bronze ciselé et doré, les angles rentrants, la façade centrée d'un médaillon orné de corne teintée bleu à l'imitation du lapis-lazuli ouvrant par un vantail, sur une plinthe centrée d'une rosace

Exceptionnel tant par sa qualité que par son sujet ce cartel musical fut réalisé d’après le fameux dessin attribué à André-Charles Boulle (1642-1732) intitulé Dessin pour une horloge murale avec L'Amour vainqueur de Temps aujourd’hui conservé au musée des arts décoratifs de Paris (inv. 723.D.6).
La figure du putto ailé muni d’une faux surmontant Chronos couché est inspirée d’une gravure de Niccolo Vicentino (1510-1550) et figurait notamment sur une fresque aujourd’hui disparue de Pordenone pour le Palazzo d’Anna à Venise. Enfin, la figure du Temps fut quant à elle imaginée par François Girardon (1628-1715) pour le bassin de Saturne à Versailles.
Nous savons grâce à l’inventaire du 6 octobre 1715 que plusieurs cartels de ce type continuaient à être produit dans l’atelier de Boulle. L’Acte de Delaissement mentionne en effet Quatre figures de Temps de ronde bosse pour des pandulles, 300l. Dans l’inventaire de 1732 dressé après la mort de Boulle nous retrouvons également Une boete contenant les modeles de la pendula de M. Desmarais dont le Temps couche est de M. Girardon.

De nombreux exemples de ce modèle de cartel nous sont aujourd’hui parvenus. Citons un cartel comparable attribué à Boulle conservé à la Wallace Collection (Inv. F 43). Un second, présentant un mouvement signé par Charles Le Bon (1678-après 1739), anciennement dans la collection du comte de Toulouse, vers 1719, se trouve maintenant au Musée des beaux-arts du Canada. Le musée du Louvre conserve un régulateur (inv. OA 6746) présentant un dessin contemporain de ce modèle par Gilles-Marie Oppenord (1672-1742) (J-N. Ronfort, André Charles Boulle, Paris et Francfort, 2009, p. 342, cat. n° 76, ill.).

Aujourd’hui nous connaissons également plusieurs pendules seule, sans base, inspirées de ce thème allégorique. Citons :
- Une pendule conservée au J.P. Getty Museum (inv. 72.D.55), le mouvement est réalisé par Paul Gudin.
- Une pendule ayant appartenu au Caridnal Pietro Ottobini et aujourd’hui conservée au musée Gulbenkian à Lisbonne (inv. 256).
- Une pendule présente dans la royale collection du château de Windsor avec notamment un mouvement remplacé et fourni par Benjamin Lewis Vulliamy (inv. RCIN 300013).
- Un exemple anciennement propriété de Lydie d’Harcourt, marquise de Pommereux fut présenté à la vente lors de la dispersion de la collection de Robert de Balkany chez Christie’s à Londres le 22-23 mars 2017, lot 75.
Enfin, une version dite en contrepartie anciennement dans les collections de Léon Fould puis Rothschild fut présentée à la vente chez Christie’s à Londres le 4 juillet 2019, lot 39.

The website illustrations are accurate.
There are the inevitable marks, dents, cracks, shrinkage cracks and rubbing due to age and use.

Clock :
The clock from the Napoleon III period. The feet are associated with some traces of former holes now refilled.
Dial : with some traces of dirt and some minor chips to the enamel. The gilding of the dial is rubbed, especially to the external part.
Gilding : The two leaves are probably later.
With some signs of tarnishing to the exposed areas: to the drapery and to the both figures.
There are some minor casting flaws especially to the front and the left part of the drapery.
The balance of the allegorical figure is missing.
One minor ormolu element is missing to the front left foot.
Two screws are missing, one to the left drapery and one to the front one.
Marquetery : with some losses and restorations to the tortoiseshell. There are some very minor flaking areas to the brass inlaid especially to the top.

Pedestal :
As stated in the catalogue, the pedestal is from the Louis XVI period, otherwise with transformations in construction.
Some areas have been re-veneered with ebony especially to both upright and to both sides of the base.
Ormolu mounts : some elements are from Napoleon III period : the grids (and the frames of the grids), the frieze of the front door and the central rosettes of the base.
The gilding is later. There are some minor rubbed and tarnished areas especially to the upper frieze of the base.
There are some black spots and traces oxidation especially to the upper part and to the grids.
Marquetery : from the Louis XIV period. With restorations and minor losses. There are some minor cracks to the tortoiseshell as expected.
Tinted horn : with some minor restorations and losses with some yellowish areas.

Please note that this condition report has been written from a work of art and not a time-measuring object point of view. Therefore, this lot has not been checked by a professional clockmaker.
