The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
This handsome and grand commode is now in good condition, with the inevitable dents, scratches and wear consistent with age and use. It has undergone professional restoration which was sensitively and professionally carried out, and the overall appearance is now very sympathetic and also stable.
The boulle marquetry with some restoration; the tortoiseshell veneers with some old replacements and some with faux-tortoiseshell infills, including the upper left corner of the right side and the upper right border from the top surface. Repairs around the keyholes and extremities.
There is re-engraving overall to the pewter and brass inlay.
The few polychrome painted elements re-tinted, including five birds to the top surface.
Some mother-of-pearl inlays probably later replaced, (such as the flower-heads to the lower section of the top surface).
Small escutcheons to the top drawers missing.
The ormolu mounts worn, with signs of verdigris.
The upper sections of the side have been restored.
The front right angle slightly loose at the bottom.
With signs of inactive woodworm.
