These beautifully decorated cannons were likely made for use at Royal celebrations and entertainments. The Royal fleur-de-lys suggests they were commissioned by the Crown or a member of the Royal family. Lavish celebrations at the French court heavily incorporated military imagery and miniature cannons such as these might have been used to celebrate events such as Royal births or as part of spectacular mock battles like those famously held on the Grand Canal at Versailles.
