Lot Essay
Passionate about his hometown Shanghai, Liang Weizhou presents large-format photographs of his peculiar and very personal vision of its outskirts. Ranging from ethereal still lifes, landscapes of rocks and rivers to more contemporary settings being overtaken by factories, Liang’s eerie visions of Shanghai deliver a sense of reverie and nostalgia.
In these works, Liang’s compositions create an almost surreal experience. The photographs lie between painting and photography: Liang adds color, scratches and marks to his photographs, recalling his experience and training as a painter. Moreover, the effect presents a dichotomy between the subjective expression of painting and the objective realism of photography.
