Lot Essay

According to Judith Solodkin of SOLO Impression, Reply to Stanley Hayter was Bourgeois' response to the prominent printer, Stanley William Hayter, who founded the influential printmaking studio, Atelier 17, in 1927 in Paris. Bourgeois, who worked at Atelier 17 intermittently from its opening until 1949, often felt limited in her opportunities as a woman in the space. It was an intense, male-dominated atmosphere, and Bourgeois felt Hayter's ever present gaze. Reply to Stanley Hayter is just that — the eye defiantly stares right back at Hayter.
