Lot Essay

Stinkwood (Ocotea bullata), is a dense, fine-grained hardwood native to South Africa, particularly the Cape region. Despite its name, the timber itself has a rich and pleasant aroma once seasoned. The 'stink' is in reference to the curious scent released when the tree is freshly cut, which subsequently dissipates as it dries. It was highly prized in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries for its deep, lustrous brown color, durability, and smooth finish, making it a preferred material for Cape furniture and cabinetry (see: M. Baraitser, Cape County Furniture, Cape Town, 1978, pp. 169-175).
