This study recalls the 'blot' drawings of Alexander Cozens (1717-1786), whose work Varley would have studied at Monro's Academy (see lot 66). Cozens's idea was that an initial random ink blot would always present a form from the natural world which could be elaborated into a drawing, encouraging freedom of technique and thought.
It is notable that this drawing was owned by Varley's fellow artist John Linnell (1792-1882).
For a note on the artist, please see lot 43.
