Lot Essay

Severn was the younger son of the painter Joseph Severn (1793-1879), who was a close friend of John Keats (1795-1821) in Rome. He exhibited landscape watercolours of both Italy and Britain, and in 1871 married Joan Agnew, a cousin of John Ruskin. When Ruskin moved to Brantwood, Lake District that year, the Severns accompanied him and remained part of his household until his death. Arthur Severn's recollections of Ruskin were published in 1967, edited by James Dearden.
