Lot Essay

This suggestive sketch of Lincoln Cathedral, seen from the south-east, is painted from a stretch of common meadow beside the River Witham, which was within the parish of Washingborough. Lincoln Cathedral was one of De Wint’s favourite subjects and he returned to it often, relishing the juxtaposition of pastoral with the architectural.
