Lot Essay

Panoramic views with detailed scenes of contemporary life in Kyoto had become very popular by the early sixteenth century and continued to be in great demand until the middle of the Edo Period. They were particularly popular with the inhabitants of Kyoto, but also with its visitors, who bought them as mementoes of their trip to the capital.
These works were mainly anonymous and made by local ateliers and shop painters, and only a few have been attributed to specific artists.
