His 'splendid theory', his delight in his new country retreat, and a birthday call to Thomas Edison.

Einstein has completed work on the new version of his Unified Field Theory: 'I have now in principle finished constructing my splendid theory in the face of the lively distrust and passionate rejection of my colleagues. Myself I have absolutely no idea whether it is right, but at least the others know it even less'. His new wooden house in Caputh delights him in spite of the debts it has incurred: 'The sailing boat, the distant views, the solitary autumn walks, the relative peace and quiet, it is a paradise'. But public responsibilities still interrupt: 'This evening I must radio Edison direct in America for his birthday, a gala for the journalists. I am travelling specially to Berlin'.

Einstein's younger son, Eduard, has been visiting the Wintelers for the first time, and he is delighted to hear that it has gone well: 'I already knew that Tetel would bring you pleasure. For he is a lively and sensitive person ... he will be popular with people, especially I hope with women'. Eduard's mother Mileva has also been friendly, though that leaves Einstein unmoved.
