'Possibly it is better not to think too much'.
The Wintelers have run into financial trouble, and Einstein asks them to tell him how much they owe for their house, and the names of the holders of the mortgage or mortgages: 'I want to see if there is any possibility of improving your situation'. He also takes the opportunity of wishing Maja a happy birthday in advance (her actual birthday was 18 November), noting that this is 'the only one whose date I have firmly in my mind'.
In Berlin all are well: Einstein is going to Argentina in March, responding to a long-standing invitation. He has recently visited their uncle Caesar Koch, who has become 'a little shaky, but remains a lovely chap [ein netter Kerl ist er geblieben]'. As for Einstein himself: 'My life is rather restless, my pad has become like a lawyer's office [meine Bude wie eine Advokatur], so that I have too little time left for thinking. Possibly it is better that way, as one notices less...'.
