Lot Essay

Romanelli’s Sulamitide is a beautiful depiction of an Odalisque, a popular character of 19th century Orientalism. An Odalisque is a female slave and member of a Turkish harem. She is the subject of Romanelli’s source of inspiration, the 18th century play La Sulamitide boschereccia sagra di Neralco - pastore arcade by Giuseppe Maria Ercolani.
