詳情
Count Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy (1828-1910)
An acknowledgement of a letter. 1905
Document signed ('Léon Tolstoy'), an acknowledgement of delivery, [stamped Tula, 9 July 1905].

In English. Printed form, completed in manuscript, one leaf, 328 x 203mm, laid onto paper, stamps of the dispatching and receiving post offices.

An acknowledgement of a letter, with a fine, complete signature. Tolstoy signs a formal receipt for a letter sent to him from Bournemouth, England, on 8 July by his disciple (and later editor) Vladimir Chertkov (1854-1936).

Tolstoy's published letters to Chertkov include nothing between 6 July and 11 August 1905, and therefore give no clues to the content of Chertkov's letter, or why it required a formal acknowledgement. Chertkov had been living in exile in England since 1897, and was to return to Russia only in 1908, after an amnesty.
