Ivan Alekseyevich Bunin (1870-1953)
A signed photograph in the year of his death. 1953
Portrait signed ('Ivan Bunin'), and inscribed to Masao Yonekawa, Paris, 6 September 1953.

The image a page extracted from a book and laid onto card, dated 'Moscow 1903' by Bunin 180 x 110mm, grey paper mount 215 x 152mm. Inscribed in Russian in red ink on the image.

Two months before his death, Bunin signs a portrait from his distant youth. This is an exceptionally late signature: Bunin died just two months later, on 8 November: the presence of a facsimile signature below the printed portrait underlines the changes in his handwriting over his last decade. Masao Yonekawa (1891-1965) was a leading Japanese translator of Russian literature.
