Permission to publish 'everything ... of interest to the German public'. Having come to Bougival two days before, Turgenev has lost the second of two letters from his correspondent, and cannot therefore make a detailed response to his enquiry. 'However to your main question I can reply with the most complete authorisation – to allow everything which you find appropriate and of interest to the German public in the book I sent you – (hopefully you received it?) – to appear in print'. Turgenev is to stay at Bougival until the end of October, and would be happy to have a few lines from his correspondent.

Turgenev had bought an estate at Bougival, outside Paris, in the previous year, and in 1875 constructed for himself a half-Russian, half-Swiss dacha in the grounds, which he used as a country residence until the end of his life (having transferred the main house to Pauline Viardot): it is now a museum.
