THACKERAY, William M. (1811-1863) – Addison, Charles G. (1812-1866). Damascus and Palmyra: a Journey to the East. London: Richard Bentley, 1838.

First edition of Addison's important Middle Eastern travelogue, illustrated with costume plates after William Thackeray—rare first issue with 8 additional plates. Addison focuses on the city of Damascus as well as the famous ruins of Palmyra. Most copies are the second issue with only 10 illustrations, but the present copy contains 18 total plates. Not yet a famous novelist, Thackeray supported himself by travel writing, journalism, and illustration. Blackmer 5; Atabey 9; not in Abbey.

Two volumes, octavo. Half titles in both volumes, 17 hand-colored lithographs (light dustsoiling throughout, a few small chips and tears). Original gilt-stamped green cloth, partially unopened (text blocks cracked and separated from binding; vol 2 with front board detached). Provenance: Edith C.M. Wren (signature on vol 2 flyleaf) – E.D. Church (bookplates).
