ORTELIUS, Abraham (1527-1598). Americae sive novi orbis, nova descriptio. [Antwerp: 1579-1587.]

One of the most famous early maps of the Americas. "Functional as well as decorative ... [it] was widely sold throughout Europe and had a great influence on the future cartography of the New World" (Burden). This is printed from the 1579 copper plate, the second one made after the first edition of 1570. It retains the distinctive bulge on the southwestern coast of South America which was removed in 1587. Hand-colored engraved map, 356 x 494mm on 456 x 552mm sheet (marginal soiling, marginal dampstain to top corners, crease near centerfold).
