Attractive and rare set of the first Elzevir edition of the works of Cicero, "très jolie et fort recherchée" (Willems). The text is taken from Jan Gruter (1560-1627). Cicero was the Roman gentleman-intellectual par excellence, and his work encompasses everything from acrobatic oratory and political theory to philosophical musings and intimate letters to his friends. Ten volumes in eight, 12mo (130 x 75mm). Engraved title page in first vol, other title pages with woodcut device; engraved portrait of Cicero. Contemporary yapped vellum, titles in ink on spines.
