ERCILLA, Alonso de (1533–1594). Collection of five editions of La araucana.

Collection of five editions of Ercilla’s epic poem on Spain’s conquest of Chile, comprising:

Primera, segunda, y tercera parte de la Araucana. Madrid: Juan de la Cuesta, 1610. 12mo (141 × 96mm). Woodcut Spanish royal arms on title-page (title-page rebacked, toned). 18th-century gold-tooled green morocco, Spanish royal arms on covers, marbled endleaves (rebacked, rubbed, bumped stain on upper cover). Provenance: José M. Rodriguez, Bibliotheca Chizigonana (1938 bookplate).

Araucana. Madrid: Imprenta del Reino, 1632. 12mo (153 × 97mm). (2S2 loose, several leaves toned and dampstained). Contemporary limp vellum, yapp edges, two fore-edge ties, recycled printed endleaves from Libro de la Declaracion de la ley Christiana (Taraçona: Diego la Torre, 1614) (large stain on lower cover, slash through spine). Provenance: the Counts of Bureta (stamp on title-page).

La Araucana. Madrid: Olivo Bajo for Francisco Martinez Abad, 1738. Title-page in red and black within fleuron border, woodcut Spanish royal arms on title-page, engraved portrait of Ercilla (few light stains). Contemporary gold-tooled red sheep, Spanish royal arms on covers, edges gilt and gauffred (rehinged, joints cracked, spine cracked and toned, few holes through covering material, rubbed); slipcase. Provenance: Caroli Sarolea (20th-century bookplate).

La araucana. Madrid: Antonio de Sancha, 1776. 2 vols, octavo (180 × 109mm). Half-title, engraved frontispiece portrait of Ercilla, folding engraved map of Chile (spotting, repaired tear in map). Uniform Spanish sheep, rubbed (rubbed).

La araucana. Madrid: M. de Burgos, 1828. 2 vols, 12mo (114 × 73mm). (few small stains). 18th-century gold-tooled morocco, edges gilt, blue endleaves dotted with gold (rubbed); slipcase. Provenance: S. Ibáñez (contemporary inscriptions) – Juan Gallardo Hernandez (contemporary stamps and one inscription).
