Three 18th-century counterfeits of popular Portuguese shipwreck stories. Tales of disaster from Portugal’s exploits during the Age of Discovery stimulated much material for vernacular literature, leading to several pamphlets describing shipwrecks and the harrowing journeys of the crews. The Lisbon printer António Pedroso Galrão produced many counterfeit "first editions" of shipwreck accounts across the 18th century, when many of the tales were being collected by Gomes de Brito to form him widely-read two-volume História trágico-marítima. Payan, Livros Clandestinos e Contrafacções, pp. 251–53; 218–24; 243–47. Sold as a group, not subject to return.

Three volumes, quarto (203 × 148mm). (Soiling, most leaves toned, occasional spotting.) Uniform modern gold-tooled brown calf by Frederico d’Almeida, spines lettered and tooled in gold, marbled endleaves (rubbed at extremities, joints cracking). Provenance: with O Mundo do Livro, Lisbon – José Mindlin, 1914-2010 (bookplates).
