HAMILTON, Alexander (c.1757-1804). His franking signature ("A Hamilton") on a transmittal envelope addressed to Isaac Carty, [New York, c. 24 June 1789].

204 x 325mm (folded to 90 x201mm). (Some dust soiling, partial split along top fold, small loss from seal read, backed with later paper). Hinged to a mat and framed with an engraving of Hamilton.

A fine example of Hamilton's franking signature accomplished early in his tenure as Secretary of the Treasury. Isaac Carty, the recipient, was a Delaware officer during the Revolutionary War who, as evidenced by title on the cover, served as an "Assistant Commissary of Stores" during part of the conflict. (See obituary in the Pennsylvania Mercury, and Universal Advertiser, 15 December 1789, p. 3). Provenance: William E. Simon – by descent to the consignor.
