詳情
WASHINGTON, George (1732-1799). Autograph letter signed ("Go:Washington") as President to Col. William Augustine Washington, Philadelphia, 17 May 1795.

One page, bifolium, 228 x 188mm. (Light foxing.) Addressed in his hand on the integral transmittal leaf and franked, "Recom[ende]d to the care of the Post Master Fredericksb[ur]g. President U.S.," bearing a circular, black "18 MAR" cancellation at top left (small loss and marginal tear from wax seal, slight browning a folds); hinged to a mat and framed with an engraved portrait.

A brief note to his nephew, signed and franked as President: "If the enclosed [not present] should get to your hands in time, it may serve to remove doubts, and for that purpose I give it a chance in the course of Post." According to the Papers of George Washington, the former enclosure was a 9 May 1795 letter from George Cabot informing the President the enrollment of "the young Lee's and Brent's mentioned by your Nephew will probably be admitted" to Philip's Andover Academy. The same year, William Augustine's son Augustine together with his nephew Bushrod Washington, Jr. would also be enrolled at the school as well as Cassius Lee (1779-1798) and Francis Lightfoot lee (1782-1850). Published in The Papers of George Washington, Vol 18, p. 157. An attractive example of Washington's hand written as President with a fine example of his postal frank.
