Historia da muy notavel perda do Galeam Grande S. Joam. Lisbon: Antonio Alvares, [c.1625/1633].

Earliest shipwreck story from a group of pamphlets often bound together. Describing the famed 1552 shipwreck of the São João, the present text is attributed by Barbosa Machado to Álvaro Fernandes (fl. 15th-century). There were multiple undated reprints of this text which have not been enumerated in published bibliographies to our knowledge. According to a pencil note by José Mindlin, the present copy was printed in 1625 or 1633 and not 1713 as noted by an earlier owner. The tales from these pamphlets were later collected by Gomes de Brito to form him widely-read two-volume História trágico-marítima. Cf. BNP RES. 335//1 V.

Quarto (196 × 133mm). Woodcut depicting the shipwreck, title within woodcut border (without final blank). Modern half calf, spine gilt, edges gilt (rubbed at extremities and along joints). Provenance: José Mindlin, 1914-2010 (bookplate and bibliographic notes to front endpapers).
