First edition, second issue, of this pioneering medical photography portraying mental illness and epilepsy. Rare complete. Bourneville was Charcot's assistant at the Salpêtrière from 1870-1879. His work is devoted to the study of hysteria and epilepsy. The last volume also includes chapters on hypnosis, witchcraft, magnetism and somnambulism. The first volume is the later issue with photolithographed plates as in vols. II and III rather than albumens. GM 4558; Norman 291.

Three volumes, quarto (219 x 165mm). Half-titles with engraved vignette, errata. 120 plates mostly photolithographs after Regnard, 37 cuts mostly by Loreau (occasional faint foxing, edges toned, very few plates toned). Contemporary quarter red morocco, leaves mounted on 25mm tabs (extremities rubbed; some marks to boards; vol III, pl. XXIX tab with two small tears but secure). Provenance: Dr. Homer Wakefield (flyleaf inscriptions) – "F.M." (unidentified bookplate).
