MONTRESOR, John (1736-1788?). Province de New-York. Paris: le Rouge, 1777.

An attractive and important strategic map of the Hudson: one of the most detailed maps of the New York area during the American Revolution. Captain Montresor was a British military engineer and the first edition of this map appeared in 1775. It extends from Lake Champlain down the Hudson to Long Island, with insets of Lake Champlain and the White Hills of the upper Connecticut Valley. For le Rouge edition, the title and the caption for the White Hills inset are translated into French but the text in the main map remains in English. Schwartz and Ehrenberg Mapping of America pl.114.

Engraved map hand-colored in outline comprising four engraved and joined sheets, two inset maps, together approximately 1490 x 950mm (58.75 x 37.5 inches) sheet size (top edge hinged to later paper panel with grommets, some very pale cleaned mold stains to horizontal joint and lower right, folds reinforced on verso).
