EINSTEIN, Albert (1879-1955). Signed portrait ("Albert Einstein") with the inscribed date "1943", applied beneath a pasted image of Einstein with a pipe clenched in his mouth.

One page, 170 x 245mm.

A portrait of Einstein with a pipe, signed on the mount. The image was removed from a magazine article about Einstein's new book "The Evolution of Physics" in the 11 April 1938 issue of Life magazine. Well-known for his pipe smoking, Einstein was a member of the Montreal Pipe Smokers Club and reportedly stated his belief that "pipe smoking contributes to a somewhat calm and objective judgment in all human affairs." The scientist would eventually give up smoking at the advice of his doctor, though he would continue carrying one for many years for the tactile experience. One of his brier pipes, given to a friend and admirer Gina Plunguian in 1953, has become one of the most popular objects in the Modern Physics collection of the National Museum of American History.
