LINCOLN, Abraham (1809-1865). Autograph endorsement signed ("A. Lincoln") as President, n.p., 3 March 1862, comprising three lines total, plus signature and dateline. Accomplished on the verso of a letter of recommendation from eight Missouri representatives to Secretary of War Edwin Stanton.

Two pages, bifolium, 195 x 250mm (some ink transfer and show-through from signatures impacting text of the letter, not intruding on Lincoln's endorsement).

Lincoln submits an endorsement from eight Missouri legislators to appoint a volunteer Maryland infantryman as lieutenant in a regular regiment. The letter endorses Capt. Samuel B. Clements, late of Pike County, Missouri, from the Fourth Regiment Maryland Volunteers. The letter asserts that Clements entered the service along with three brothers, and supports his promotion due to his efficiency as an officer and his military education. Signatories of this letter include: John B. HENDERSON (1826-1869), U.S. Senator best known for co-authoring the Thirteenth Amendment who later served as the first special prosecutor in U.S. history; Robert WILSON (1802-1870), U.S Senator from Missouri; James S. ROLLINS (1812-1888), U.S Congressman and later known as the "Father of the University of Missouri"; Thomas L. PRICE (1809-1870), U.S. Congressman and the first mayor of Jefferson City; Elijah H. NORTON (1861-1863), U.S. Congressman and one of the primary authors of the Missouri Constitution of 1875; John S. PHELPS (1814-1886), U.S. Congressman and later Governor of Missouri who organized "Phelps’s Regiment", Missouri Volunteer Infantry, by special arrangement with Lincoln; John W. NOELL (1858-1863); and one unidentified.
