First edition, first state. The present copy is the first state with “gve” for “give” on p.135. Rothschild 463.

Two volumes, quarto (262 x 200mm). Engraved portrait frontispiece of Johnson by James Heath after Sir Joshua Reynolds, 2 engraved plates of facsimiles by H. Shepherd, and all seven cancels present (dampstain to margins of frontispiece, some offsetting to title page, light marginal dampstain intermittently toward end of vol. 2). Contemporary calf, red morocco spine labels (rebacked but retaining most of original labels, corners showing). Provenance: early marginal annotations.
