The brilliantly confusing and amusing Carsten Höller defies any attempt to categorize what type of artist he is and, in fact, he began his career as a scientist studying insects. Höller has referred to his work that includes sculpture, installation, performance art and photography as "confusion machines." Höller toys with our visual perception and has long been intrigued by the constructions and trappings of child's play. "Experience," the 2012 retrospective at The New Museum in New York featured a giant slide among the works that helped make the show the museum's most popular ever. Höller has also created his own carousels, one of which was on view at the Gagosian gallery in London in 2005 and called "a spectacular, surprising, pleasurable - and intentionally pleasure-giving - object," by The Guardian. Albinia Two Carousels, from his 2005 series of photographs of amusements parks and rides around the globe, is a simpler yet exquisite expression of the artist's affinity toward the experiences and images that delight us.
