“Noland’s palette, with its range of iridescent pinks and lilacs, icy blues and greens, florid reds and purples, is more overtly gorgeous than at any time in the past. [...] In these pictures, the modulation of color from dark to light is detached from description and illusionism, just as surface inflection and touch itself is similarly set free. It is not an overstatement to say that that the flourishes and flickering light of Baroque painting have been appropriated for abstraction in the ‘rough chevrons’..."
