Lot Essay

This figure was modelled by Kändler circa 1757-58 and is derived from an engraving titled L'oeconome by J.P. Le Bas (1707-83), which was published in 1754 and which was after a painting by Jean-Siméon Chardin. For an illustration of the engraving see W.B. Honey, Dresden China, London, 1934, p. 119, pl. LI (a). See also Dr. Erika Pauls-Eisenbeiss, German Porcelain of the 18th Century, London, 1972, p. 98 for a similar figure and details of comparable examples. The model is also illustrated and discussed by Angela Gräfin von Wallwitz, Celebrating Käendler, Munich, 2006, cat. 28.
