Lot Essay

The lid of the 'necessaire de toilette' celebrates love's triumph with a rose-flowered and cameo-cut oyster-shell depicting a coastal vignette with Cupid-embraced Venus in her swan-drawn chariot; while the façade of the ormolu box incorporates tablets of flower-engraved shell and coastal vignettes behind glass.
